Take Action Today
Community leaders are meeting with the developer in September, and we need to send a clear message. Make your voice heard now. Here’s how you can help:
Take the survey TO make your voice heard
If you have not already, please register your opposition by taking a brief survey. By providing your email, we can organize our voice when it’s most needed (e.g., speaking at a city council meeting).
Request a yard sign
Show your support and spread the word to your neighbors. A neighborhood full of signs sends a clear, powerful message.
ATTEND AN EVENT
Get informed, join us at City Hall, and learn of more ways we’re engaging the public to Stop the 6th Ward Gas Station.
Write to Your elected Houston City Council Members
Your elected officials need to hear from you directly. Personal stories are the most effective—explain how it would affect your family, your health, and your enjoyment of our unique neighborhood. A template of points to consider is provided below.
Subject: I Oppose the Gas Station at 1909 Washington Ave
Dear Council Member [Name],
I am writing to you today as a concerned resident to express my strong opposition to the proposed "Kudos" gas station at 1909 Washington Avenue in the Old Sixth Ward.
This development is a direct threat to our community for several reasons:
Historic Character: It is out of character with the rest of the Old Sixth Ward Historic District. We are calling on the City of Houston to leverage the restrictions on the developer’s deed in order to protect the historic nature of the neighborhood.
Health & Safety: It will release carcinogenic pollutants like benzene just feet from homes where children and vulnerable residents live.
Crime: It risks bringing increased crime and loitering into our quiet residential neighborhood.
Walkability: It will add dangerous traffic to an intersection that has recently been improved to support pedestrian and cyclist safety.
Our neighborhood is already well-served by seven other gas stations within a one-mile radius. This project serves no community need and introduces only negative impacts.
I urge you to use your influence to oppose this development and stand with the residents of the Old Sixth Ward in protecting our historic and unique community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
