Signpost for Old Sixth Ward Historic District, established in 1858, with buildings and trees in the background.

Protect the old sixth ward.

A new gas station is planned for the corner of Washington & Silver.

We have a chance to stop it, but we need to act now.

A Gas Station Threatens Our Community

A developer has filed plans to build a "Kudos" gas station at 1909 Washington Avenue. This development is dangerously out of character with Houston's first protected historic district and poses significant risks to our safety, health, and quality of life. A 24/7 gas station introduces crime, dangerous traffic, and harmful air pollution right next door to our homes.

Increased Crime & Safety Risks

Studies show a link between gas stations selling alcohol and a rise in local crime. The increased traffic will endanger pedestrians and cyclists in a neighborhood designed for walking.

Air Pollution & Health Hazards

Gas stations release benzene, a known carcinogen with no safe level of exposure. This is a direct threat to the many children and vulnerable residents living just feet from the proposed site.

Threat to Historic Character

A generic, brightly-lit gas station is incompatible with the character of the Old Sixth Ward, risking the historic value residents have worked for decades to preserve.

Community Concerns: Overwhelming Opposition

A survey of 158 Old Sixth Ward residents shows the community is strongly united against this project. The top concerns focus on safety, historic character, pollution, and the negative impact on our walkable neighborhood.

Do We Need Another Gas Station? No.

The area is already saturated. There are seven other gas stations within a 1-mile radius. This project doesn't serve a community need; it only introduces risk.
